Microstrip antennas with suppressed radiation in horizontal directions

Antonije Djordjevic and Marija Nikolic

The presentation would address identification of near-field, radiation-field and surface-wave coupling mechanisms; identification of physical sources of radiation in horizontal directions; and interpretation of various techniques for reducing parasitic coupling in terms of cancellation of fields produced by polarization and conduction currents. The presentation would tackle some open questions for future research, including theoretical establishing of relations between the conditions for suppressing surface waves and suppressing radiated fields in horizontal directions; verification on examples where the surface-wave coupling is clearly pronounced (thick substrates/superstrates, high permittivity); and investigation of the influence of PBG structures (embedded into the substrate) on reducing the coupling (by comparing the surface wave and the radiated field).
